What to bring when snorkeling in Cozumel
When you join us for one of our Cozumel snorkeling excursions, we will provide all the gear you will need to go snorkeling. Alternatively, if you are heading out into the sea solo, you will need to bring goggles and a snorkel breathing tube or a snorkel mask which goes over your face and allows you to breathe through it.
Some snorkelers also bring floatation devices and flippers to enhance the speed and ease of their exploration. But, that’s totally up to personal preference! You can find all the snorkel equipment you need at any one of the many local dive shops you’ll find scattered across the island.
Be sure to pack sunscreen or wear sun protective clothing as you will be floating under the bright sun for an extended period of time. Consider bringing water shoes as well, especially if you are going snorkeling in one of the shallower areas in Cozumel.
Things to know before going snorkeling in Cozumel
Probably the most important thing to do before you go snorkeling is to check the weather. Ensure you are looking forward to a day of sunny skies without a lot of wind to whip up the waves. This will not only make your snorkel more enjoyable, but it’s important for safety and visibility as well.
When planning a snorkel trip in Cozumel, it’s imperative to know that the west side of the island tends to have a very strong undertow and can be dangerous for swimming. Sticking to other areas can be better for visibility and safety, especially if you are not an experienced snorkeler.
All of the beaches in Cozumel are federally owned, so they are open to the public and you are welcome to go snorkeling anywhere you please. But, if you don’t book a tour with a designated tour guide, you may want to rent a boat because many of the best snorkeling spots are far offshore. Alternatively, if you just want to swim directly off the beach, you can still make yourself a wonderful day of snorkeling.
Where are the best places to snorkel in Cozumel?
Did you know El Cielo means heaven in Spanish? Well, this dive spot definitely earns its name. About a mile from the shoreline, you will discover some of the bluest water you have ever seen in your life. In this beautiful spot, you will also get treated to a wide variety of starfish and stingrays, so it’s a great place to snorkel.
Villa Blanca Reef
This is one of the locations on the west side of the island that is great for snorkeling, but can be dangerous for less experienced swimmers. While this area is relatively shallow, you can still find a large array of underwater wildlife.
Located in the southern area of the island, Columbia Reef is home to sharks and manta rays as well as countless brightly coloured fish. It’s definitely on the deeper side, so ensure you are comfortable with swimming in deep water before going.
