Colorful Tropical Fish & Blue-Footed Booby Birds

Prepare to be amazed as you plunge into Puerto Vallarta’s underwater world. Our snorkeling and scuba diving tours are your ticket to the incredible marine life at the National Park Marietas Islands and the National Park Los Arcos

You won’t believe your eyes as you swim alongside schools of tropical fish you can’t see at your local aquarium. And if you look to the skies, you might even spot the beautiful blue-footed booby birds perched on rocky outcrops. These birds are just as curious about you as you are about them, and they make for a unique encounter.

From snorkeling to scuba diving, these tours are a great way to experience Vallarta’s animal encounters.

Learn More About Tropical Fish and Blue-Footed Booby Birds:

  • Many tropical fish live in coral reefs, providing them with food, shelter, and breeding grounds.

  • Tropical fish often live in schools, which helps them protect against predators and improve their foraging efficiency.

  • Some tropical fish, like clownfish, form symbiotic relationships with other sea creatures, such as sea anemones, which provide mutual benefits.

  • Blue-footed boobies are known for their striking blue feet, which they use in elaborate mating dances to attract partners. The bluer the feet, the more attractive the male.

  • Blue-footed boobies typically nest on rocky coasts and islands, laying two or three eggs at a time. Both parents take turns incubating the eggs and caring for the chicks.

  • While not currently endangered, blue-footed boobies rely on healthy marine ecosystems to thrive, making conservation of their habitats crucial.

Macaws, Flamingos, and Lemurs

Las Caletas beach is an animal lover’s dream come true. It’s here that you’ll walk alongside elegant flamingos, pet playful beach-loving pigs, go visit the lemurs, spider monkeys, or have fun watching adorable pigs playing in the golden sands of Las Caletase — and to add a splash of color to this already vibrant scene, you can even see the mealy parrot flying around.

Thanks to our Macaw Reproduction Program, a part of our Sustainability and Conservation efforts, you can also experience dozens of these beautiful, colorful birds flying around freely. Seeing these creatures makes for an animal encounter you’ll never forget.

If you’re a fan of underwater adventures, we’ll also take you on a snorkeling tour through Las Caletas. These clear waters are full of incredible marine life that complements what you witness on land.

About Macaws, Flamingos, Spider Monkeys, and Lemurs:

  • Macaws are known for their vibrant feathers and strong, curved beaks that crack nuts and seeds easily.

  • They are highly social and often mate for life, forming strong bonds with their partners.

  • Macaws can mimic human speech and other sounds, showcasing their remarkable intelligence.

  • Flamingos get their pink color from their diet, which is rich in beta-carotene found in algae and crustaceans.

  • They often stand on one leg to conserve body heat and maintain balance.

  • A group of flamingos is called a "flamboyance."

  • Lemurs are native to Madagascar and are known for their large, reflective eyes, which help them see in low light.

  • They communicate with each other through a variety of vocalizations, scents, and even facial expressions.

  • Ring-tailed lemurs sunbathe in the morning to warm up after a cold night.

  • Spider monkeys have prehensile tails, which they use as a fifth limb to grasp and manipulate objects.

  • They are among the most intelligent of New World monkeys and have complex social structures.

  • Spider monkeys can swing through the trees at up to 35 miles per hour.

Humpback Whales

You can catch Vallarta’s humpback whales in one of two specialized tours: Our Whale Watching in Puerto Vallarta and our Whale Watching Adventure, ideal for families, as it includes lunch and open bar and has no minimum age limit. Visiting Marietas Islands during the winter is also an excellent way to see Vallarta’s humpback whales.

These giants will migrate to the warm waters off Puerto Vallarta during this whale season, typically from December 8th to March 30th, for a once-in-a-lifetime encounter.

Incredible Facts About Humpback Whales:

  • Humpback whales are famous for their complex songs, which can last hours and be heard over great distances.

  • They perform acrobatic breaches, leaping out of the water and crashing back down, possibly as a form of communication or play.

  • Each humpback whale's fluke (tail) has unique markings, similar to human fingerprints, which researchers use to identify individual whales.
