Visiting Mascota
Bring a light sweater with you because this small colonial town in the Sierras can be cooler and drier than Puerto Vallarta. It’s truly charming here, with a vibe that might convince you that you’ve gone back in time. Mascota was once an important trading city, but now agriculture is the most common calling - so much so that the fruit you enjoyed as you ate breakfast in Puerto Vallarta may have been grown right here in Mascota.

There’s a lot more to enjoy than the produce here, however. Make time to sample raicilla, a local moonshine, sip a "café de olla" or a rompope, to nibble the local sweets and tour the Mascota Casa de Cultura Museum to learn more about the petroglyphs that have been found around Mascota. Mascota is also famous for the "Fred Flintstone" house (El Museo de Piedra El Pedregal), which Francisco Rodriguez Pena has been building from stone by himself for more than 20 years!
Visiting Talpa
Just half an hour by car from Mascota you’ll find Talpa. This village is known for the pilgrimages people make to the stately twin-spired church that is home to a beloved representation of the blessed virgin, Nuestra Senora del Rosario (known as The Virgin of Talpa). Visitors also come for the lush sweeping views, the friendly people and for the rollos de guayaba, a type of sweet treat made of guava. Religious processions happen daily, but for the best and most impressive of them plan your visit on a Sunday! Shops abound, and the coffee in the region is worth a taste, as is the homemade, cream-based rompope liquor that is produced here.
